Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus has praised his team's diverse and effective bowling attack after the side defeated Zimbabwe by seven wickets to win the ODI tri-series final in Sharjah on Friday.

Afghanistan bowled Zimbabwe out for 169 in 43.3 overs before chasing down the target in just 34.3 overs. Ibrahim Zadran led the batting effort with an unbeaten 70, while captain Rahmat Shah contributed 43 runs to secure a comfortable victory.

Leg-spinner Rashid Khan was the standout performer with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 41 runs. He also continued his remarkable run of form, claiming at least three wickets in six consecutive ODIs since August. According to the report, he became only the second bowler after Pakistan's Umar Gul to achieve the feat.

Speaking after the final, Pybus highlighted the collective strength of Afghanistan's bowling unit, emphasising that the team's success was not dependent on Rashid alone.

"The spin bowling has been excellent throughout the week. We have some fantastic spinners. Rashid has been phenomenal, but he's not on his own," Pybus said. He added that the team had a diverse and competent bowling attack whose members consistently supported one another by taking wickets.

Rahmat Shah's Leadership Impresses Pybus

Pybus also praised Rahmat Shah's captaincy, as Afghanistan extended their winning streak to seven consecutive ODIs under his leadership.

Describing Rahmat as a calm, assured and inclusive leader, Pybus said the captain had created a positive atmosphere within the team while leading from the front with the bat.

He also highlighted Rahmat's performances during Afghanistan's recent tour of Ireland and the one-off Test against Bangladesh, where the captain scored a century and a half-century.

According to Pybus, Rahmat has made an excellent start to his leadership role, and he expressed confidence that the captain would continue to guide the team in a positive and inspiring manner.

Regular Matches Against Top Teams Key to Development

Despite the recent success, Pybus stressed that Afghanistan need more opportunities to compete against higher-ranked international sides to continue improving across formats.

He described the team as an evolving unit with considerable potential, adding that regular matches against top teams would be critical to their development.

Pybus also cautioned against underestimating Afghanistan's opponents, pointing out that Zimbabwe had defeated Bangladesh earlier in the tri-series with an impressive performance.

He said Afghanistan deserved credit for delivering strong performances against challenging opposition and emphasised the importance of maintaining consistency regardless of the opponent.

Players Earn Praise for Handling UAE Conditions

The Afghanistan coach also commended the players and support staff for managing the demanding heat and humidity in the United Arab Emirates.

Several players appeared physically exhausted during the day matches, particularly in the final, highlighting the challenges posed by the conditions.

Pybus credited the backroom staff for their work in maintaining the players' fitness and ensuring the team had a full squad available for selection.

He said Afghanistan were building a side capable of adapting to different playing conditions around the world, with greater squad depth and increasing competition for places.

Strong Individual Performances Boost Afghanistan

Afghanistan have enjoyed several impressive individual performances during their recent assignments in the UAE. Rahmat Shah and Sediqullah Atal scored centuries in the Test match, while fast bowlers Mohammad Saleem and Yameen Ahmadzai delivered lengthy spells.

In the ODI tri-series, Rashid Khan's outstanding bowling and Ibrahim Zadran's consistent batting played major roles in Afghanistan's success.

Pybus praised the players for taking responsibility and fulfilling their individual roles rather than relying on teammates to compensate for mistakes.

He also expressed satisfaction with the consistency of the seam bowlers, who performed well in different conditions, including on flatter pitches.

With the ODI tri-series title secured, Afghanistan will now look to carry their momentum into the T20 format. Pybus said the squad's depth and competition for places were encouraging signs as the team continued its preparations for future international challenges.
