Australia captain Steven Smith faces a crucial fitness test ahead of the decisive Test against South Africa in Cape Town, with a troublesome neck injury putting his availability for the series decider in doubt. Meanwhile, Nic Maddinson has been dropped from the squad and will return to Australia to prepare for the next Sheffield Shield match.

Smith, who experienced neck discomfort during the previous Test in Gqeberha, must complete a full net session on Monday to prove his fitness. He batted for just 15 minutes on Sunday while facing side-arm deliveries from assistant coach Michael Di Venuto, without wearing a helmet.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged that Smith's recovery would need to progress rapidly for him to be available.

"We feel like it's going to be a pretty steep progression in terms of [whether] he should be available," McDonald said. "But if we're surprised today, you'll see that play out."

Smith's absence would likely strengthen Marnus Labuschagne's chances of retaining his place in the playing XI, amid growing debate over his position at No. 3. Australia's selectors were scheduled to finalise the team on Monday morning before the final training session at Newlands in the afternoon.

Renshaw Set to Replace Maddinson

Maddinson's omission comes after a disappointing return to Test cricket. The opening batter managed scores of 0, 48, 0 and 8 across his four innings in the series following his surprise recall.

He is now heading back to Australia to be available for New South Wales' next Sheffield Shield fixture, which begins on Friday. Matt Renshaw is expected to return to the top of the order alongside Travis Head for the decisive encounter.

Chair of selectors George Bailey defended the decision to select Maddinson for the South Africa tour, insisting that his latest setback does not necessarily mark the end of his Test career.

"Performance-wise, would you like more runs in it? Yes. So that's okay," Bailey said, adding that Maddinson's selection had helped the team maintain its preferred balance while working with the available squad.

Bailey also pointed to Maddinson's second-innings performance in Durban as evidence of his potential and said the selectors would continue to assess him during the upcoming home summer against India.

"With him going home, I wanted to be clear to him it wasn't a stopgap and that's it and it's a discard," Bailey said.

Labuschagne's Position Under Scrutiny

Labuschagne's place in the batting order remains a major talking point as Australia prepare for the series decider. Although the batter has shown glimpses of form, his inability to convert starts into substantial scores has raised questions about his contribution to the team.

Bailey acknowledged that Labuschagne had been getting into the 30s but stressed that the selectors needed to consider whether those contributions were helping Australia achieve its desired results.

The selectors will weigh his individual performances against the team's overall needs when finalising the playing XI.

Harper Leaves Tour as Inglis Returns to Fitness

Wicketkeeping cover Sam Harper is also leaving the Australian tour to join Victoria ahead of its Sheffield Shield match against Queensland, which begins on Saturday.

Harper had been called up after Josh Inglis suffered a fractured finger. However, Inglis has now been cleared to resume wicketkeeping duties if first-choice wicketkeeper Alex Carey encounters any problems.

With the series on the line, Australia's final team selection will largely depend on Smith's fitness and the balance of the batting order. His participation could prove decisive as Australia prepare for the final Test against South Africa in Cape Town.
