Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has defended Marnus Labuschagne despite his disappointing performances during the team's 2-1 Test series defeat against South Africa, insisting that the batter remains a quality player and deserves opportunities at the highest level.

Labuschagne endured another difficult series, managing scores of 0 and 4 in the final Test at Newlands, Cape Town. His poor run of form has increased speculation over his place in Australia's Test squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand in Perth in early December.

The right-handed batter has failed to score a half-century in his last 16 Test innings and has averaged just 23.66 since returning to the side for the previous Ashes series. His struggles have also attracted criticism from former Australian batter Simon Katich, who suggested that the selectors may have damaged Labuschagne's career by continuing to expose him to pressure.

However, McDonald defended the team's decision to back Labuschagne throughout the South Africa tour, saying opportunities to represent Australia do not necessarily harm a player's career.

"We believed in Marnus for this tour. We'll have to reassess that as we move forward. There's still a very good cricketer there," McDonald said.

He also acknowledged that Labuschagne had failed to make the most of his opportunities and confirmed that the team management would review his position before making any decisions.

McDonald Sees Positives Despite Series Defeat

Despite Australia's disappointing 2-1 series loss, McDonald believes the team has made progress in certain areas, particularly with the batting lineup.

Australia started the series strongly but suffered two major batting collapses in the final two Tests, getting bowled out for 99 and 111. Nevertheless, McDonald highlighted the performances of Cameron Green and Josh Inglis as encouraging signs.

Inglis was particularly impressive in the first innings of the final Test, scoring a century after being brought into the playing XI at short notice following Steven Smith's injury. Matt Renshaw also emerged as Australia's leading run-scorer during the series.

McDonald believes these performances have strengthened Australia's batting options moving forward.

"If you looked at the batting unit, I think we walk away in a stronger position with Green. But for Inglis to get that opportunity, he's got two away Test hundreds, and we know how difficult it is to play away," he said.

The Australian coach also admitted that the team would need to make important decisions regarding the age profile of the squad as it prepares for upcoming international assignments.

Cameron Green Backed to Succeed Against Spin

McDonald also expressed confidence in Cameron Green's ability to handle spin bowling despite his difficulties against South African spinner Simon Harmer during the final Test.

Green struggled to establish himself at the crease in Cape Town, particularly after Australia shifted its approach towards batting for a draw.

However, McDonald insisted that Green possesses the skills and adaptability required to succeed in different conditions.

He referred to Green's impressive performance in Galle in 2022, where the all-rounder scored more than 70 runs in challenging conditions against spin.

According to McDonald, Green has the reach, footwork and ability to use the sweep shot effectively, making him a capable batter against spin bowling.

Nathan Lyon Retains Australia's No. 1 Spinner Position

McDonald also backed veteran spinner Nathan Lyon to remain Australia's first-choice spinner ahead of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.

Lyon managed six wickets at an average of 43.66 during the South Africa series and was left out of the playing XI for the second Test in favour of fast bowler Scott Boland.

Meanwhile, South African spinner Simon Harmer finished with 14 wickets at an average of 29.35.

Despite the difference in performances, McDonald indicated that Lyon's position was not currently under review.

He suggested that Lyon would use the Sheffield Shield competition to prepare for the first Test against New Zealand in Perth.

Steven Smith's Fitness and Retirement Plans

McDonald also dismissed suggestions that Steven Smith's difficult tour of South Africa had brought him closer to retirement.

Smith missed the deciding Test after his neck problem worsened following a nerve-block injection on the morning of the match. Although there had been optimism about his availability the previous day, the medical team ultimately decided that he was not fit enough to play.

McDonald defended the decision, saying both Smith and the medical staff had made every possible effort to get him ready.

He also indicated that Smith could feature in Sheffield Shield cricket before Australia's next Test assignment to regain match fitness.

New South Wales have two Sheffield Shield matches scheduled in Sydney later in November, providing Smith with an opportunity to prepare for the four-Test series against New Zealand.

Australia's selectors will also use the upcoming domestic matches to assess other players pushing for selection.

With Labuschagne's place under serious scrutiny, Green and Inglis strengthening their positions, and senior players such as Smith and Lyon approaching important stages of their careers, Australia faces several key selection decisions ahead of its next Test campaign.
