The deadline for IPL franchises to finalise their player retention and release lists ahead of the 2027 mini-auction has been extended by two days to November 17. The deadline was initially scheduled for November 15, which coincides with the fifth ODI between India and New Zealand.
The IPL 2027 mini-auction will take place on December 16 in Goa. It will be a day-long event, with franchises looking to strengthen their squads ahead of the upcoming season.
Once all teams submit their retention and release lists, the IPL will share the registered players' pool with the franchises. Teams will then shortlist players before the final list, along with the auction set order, is circulated during the week leading up to the auction.
Two Trades Completed Ahead of IPL 2027 Auction
So far, two major player trades have been completed ahead of the auction.
Delhi Capitals have brought back their former captain Rishabh Pant from Lucknow Super Giants, while left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has moved in the opposite direction.
In another deal, Delhi Capitals traded fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad in exchange for leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
These trades are expected to influence the teams' retention strategies as franchises prepare for the upcoming mini-auction.
IPL 2027 Season Dates Yet to Be Confirmed
The BCCI has not yet announced the official dates for the IPL 2027 season. However, while announcing the schedule window for the 2025, 2026 and 2027 editions in 2024, the IPL had initially earmarked March 14 to May 30 for the 2027 tournament.
More recently, following the BCCI's Annual General Meeting in September, board secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that the tournament could begin towards the end of March.
Last Mini-Auction Before 2028 Mega Auction
The IPL 2027 auction will be the final mini-auction under the league's current auction cycle. A mega auction is scheduled ahead of the 2028 season, which will mark the beginning of the IPL's next media rights cycle.
The BCCI is yet to release the tender for the next media rights agreement.
The IPL's commercial value has grown significantly over the years. In 2022, the league's media rights were sold for a staggering INR 48,390.5 crore (approximately US$6.2 billion), placing the tournament among the most valuable sporting properties in the world.
With the retention deadline now moved to November 17 and the auction scheduled for December 16, franchises have limited time to finalise their squad strategies before the final mini-auction of the current IPL cycle.
