Australia captain Pat Cummins has backed his team's overall performance despite suffering a disappointing 176-run defeat against South Africa in the series-deciding third Test at Cape Town. The defeat handed South Africa the series and marked Australia's fourth loss in their last seven Test matches.

Chasing a target of 288 runs on the final day, Australia suffered a dramatic batting collapse and were bowled out for just 111. Surprisingly, No. 10 batter Nathan Lyon emerged as the team's highest scorer with an unbeaten 33, highlighting the struggles of Australia's top and middle order.

Despite the humiliating defeat, Cummins remained confident in his team's abilities and insisted that Australia were still a strong side.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, the Australian captain acknowledged the difficulty of winning Test matches away from home but expressed satisfaction with the team's overall progress.

Cummins said Australia had travelled to South Africa believing they were good enough to win the series, but admitted that the opposition had performed better in crucial moments.

Australia's Batting Collapse Raises Serious Concerns

Australia started the series positively by winning the opening Test in Durban and taking a 1-0 lead. However, their performances deteriorated in the remaining two matches.

South Africa dominated the second Test in Gqeberha, securing an innings-and-31-run victory after recovering from an early first-innings collapse.

The third Test in Cape Town followed a similar pattern. Australia had a 41-run first-innings lead with six wickets remaining on the third day but failed to capitalise on the advantage.

Their batting collapse on the final day resulted in a 176-run defeat, with South African spinner Simon Harmer playing a major role by claiming 6/16 in the second innings and 10 wickets in the match.

Australia's batting failures have raised fresh questions about the consistency of their top order, particularly Marnus Labuschagne, who endured another disappointing outing.

Labuschagne scored 0 and 4 in Cape Town, extending his half-century drought to 16 Test innings and his century drought to 49 innings. His place in the playing XI could now come under serious scrutiny.

Cummins also expressed disappointment with the team's lack of application, pointing towards loose shots from Travis Head and Alex Carey, along with Josh Inglis' unnecessary run-out, as important moments in the collapse.

Cummins Admits South Africa Were Better in Crucial Moments

Reflecting on Australia's batting performance, Cummins admitted that the team failed to take advantage of opportunities on a pitch where runs were available for well-set batters.

He explained that the match slipped away from Australia during the opening hour of the final day, leaving the visitors with very little chance of recovering.

The captain also acknowledged that South Africa had handled the crucial moments of the series much better than his side.

According to Cummins, small moments such as missed opportunities, fielding decisions and batting mistakes ultimately made the difference between the two teams.

Australia Lose No. 1 Ranking and Face Tough Road Ahead

The series defeat has had a significant impact on Australia's position in international cricket. They have slipped to third place in the World Test Championship standings and have also surrendered their No. 1 position in the ICC Test rankings to South Africa.

Australia's recent struggles include a nine-wicket defeat against Bangladesh at home in August and consecutive Test defeats against South Africa, marking their first back-to-back losses in the format since 2023.

The team will now return home for a limited-overs series against England, featuring three ODIs and five T20Is in November.

Their next Test assignment will be a four-match home series against New Zealand, beginning in Perth on December 9.

Meanwhile, Cummins and the Australian team management are expected to hold discussions about the batting order and the team's overall approach following their disappointing performances in Gqeberha and Cape Town.

Cummins will also face questions about his decision to bowl first in Cape Town, particularly after South African spinner Simon Harmer exploited the conditions to deliver a match-winning performance.

The Australian captain's own bowling returns may also attract attention, as he managed just six wickets at an average of 54.66 during the series.

Despite the disappointing results, Cummins remains confident in Australia's quality. However, the upcoming home assignments will provide an important opportunity for the team to address its weaknesses and regain momentum in Test cricket.
