Sydney Thunder continued their impressive start to the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) season with a convincing six-wicket victory over Brisbane Heat at Drummoyne Oval. Chasing a challenging target of 179, Thunder reached 180 for 4 in just 16.4 overs, securing the win with 20 balls to spare.
The victory also extended Brisbane Heat's winless streak to 12 matches, with their last victory coming on November 29, 2024, nearly 702 days ago.
Brisbane Heat posted an impressive 178 for 5 after being asked to bat first, registering the highest WBBL total at Drummoyne Oval. However, Thunder responded with an aggressive batting performance to record their highest successful run chase in the tournament.
Heather Knight and Phoebe Litchfield Lead Thunder's Run Chase
Sydney Thunder suffered an early setback when Georgia Voll was dismissed for just two runs. However, Phoebe Litchfield provided the perfect response with a blistering 41 off just 19 deliveries, giving the hosts early momentum.
England's experienced batter Heather Knight then took control of the chase with an unbeaten 54 off 29 balls. She built a crucial 63-run partnership with Anika Learoyd, who contributed 37 off 28 deliveries.
Knight later combined with Laura Harris, who smashed 35 runs from just 16 balls, to put Thunder firmly in control. Harris was eventually caught by her sister Grace Harris with only three runs required for victory.
Knight remained unbeaten and guided Thunder comfortably across the finishing line, helping her team register their second consecutive victory of the season.
Speaking after the match, Knight expressed her happiness at securing a home victory and contributing with the bat.
"To win at home is a key thing for us this year. It was a belter of a pitch. We've probably been used to it being a little bit more harder for batters. Delighted to contribute as well, and it's always a nice feeling to be not out at the end," Knight said.
Grace Harris and Georgia Redmayne Power Brisbane Heat to 178
Earlier, Brisbane Heat produced a strong batting performance after losing an early wicket. Grace Harris and Georgia Redmayne joined forces to rebuild the innings and put together an impressive 99-run partnership for the second wicket.
Grace Harris scored a quickfire 58 off 37 balls, while Redmayne contributed 57 from 44 deliveries. Their partnership took Heat to 118 for 1 in the 14th over, putting the visitors in a promising position.
Orla Prendergast provided additional momentum towards the end with 28 runs off 20 balls, helping Brisbane Heat finish at 178 for 5.
However, the visitors struggled to accelerate in the final overs and could not add enough runs to put Thunder under significant pressure.
For Sydney Thunder, Georgia Voll was the standout bowler with two wickets for 25 runs, while Hannah Bassingthwaighte also picked up two wickets for 31 runs.
Following the defeat, Grace Harris admitted that Brisbane Heat's bowling performance was not good enough against Thunder's powerful batting lineup.
"Their batters hit boundaries where we hit ones, so we've only got ourselves to blame. These guys are a dynamic batting line-up, so they are going to put you under the pump and they are going to hit the ball, and hit hard," Harris said.
With this victory, Sydney Thunder made it two wins from two matches, while Brisbane Heat will be desperate to end their prolonged winless run in the upcoming fixtures.
