English all-rounder Saif Zaib is set to join Hampshire after leaving Northamptonshire with one year remaining on his contract. The move is expected to strengthen Hampshire's squad as they aim to secure an immediate return to Division One of the County Championship.
Zaib, 28, informed Northamptonshire of his decision to leave at the end of the season despite having extended his contract in early 2025. Although the club attempted to convince him to reconsider, the two parties have now agreed to part ways.
Zaib enjoyed an outstanding 2025 County Championship campaign, finishing as the country's leading run-scorer with 1,425 runs at an average of 64.77, including six centuries. While his numbers were comparatively lower this season, he still scored 856 runs at 42.80, registering three hundreds. He also played a key role in Northamptonshire's T20 Blast-winning campaign.
Northamptonshire narrowly missed out on promotion from Division Two this season, while Hampshire suffered relegation from the top division. Zaib's expected arrival will provide a significant boost to Hampshire's efforts to rebuild their squad and challenge for promotion.
Hampshire have already strengthened their ranks by signing Rishi Patel from Leicestershire and Fynn Hudson-Prentice from Sussex. The club is rebuilding following the retirements of James Vince and Liam Dawson from red-ball cricket.
In a statement released on Thursday, Northamptonshire confirmed Zaib's departure, saying the batter had informed the club at the end of the season that he did not see his future at Northamptonshire, despite discussions aimed at changing his decision.
Reflecting on his time with the club, Zaib expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his career.
"It's been a real honour to represent Northamptonshire CCC, especially as the club has been such a big part of my life for so long," Zaib said. He also thanked the supporters for their continued encouragement, describing the memories and friendships he built at the club as something he would always treasure.
Beyond county cricket, Zaib is also looking to expand his opportunities in franchise competitions. He spent four weeks with Southern Brave in The Hundred this summer and subsequently featured in the Canada Super60 tournament. He is currently representing Sudur Paschim Royals in the Nepal Premier League.
Zaib's expected move to Hampshire marks a new chapter in his career, with the left-handed batter likely to play an important role in the club's bid to return to the County Championship's top division.
