Azmatullah Omarzai produced a sensational batting performance, smashing his maiden T20I century to help Afghanistan secure a thrilling 19-run victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20I and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Afghanistan recovered from a disastrous start to post an imposing 221 for 7 after being reduced to 5 for 4 inside the first four overs. Omarzai's explosive 116 off just 50 deliveries transformed the innings, while Sikandar Raza's unbeaten century in the chase could not prevent Zimbabwe from falling short.
The victory also marked a historic occasion for Afghanistan, as Rashid Khan became the first bowler to claim 200 wickets in men's T20 internationals.
Omarzai and Ijaz script remarkable recovery
Afghanistan's innings began in disastrous fashion as Zimbabwe's Brad Evans and Kundai Matigimu dismantled the top order. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Mohammad Akram, Ibrahim Zadran and Shahidullah Kamal were dismissed cheaply, leaving Afghanistan struggling at 5 for 4.
Sediqullah Atal briefly offered resistance with 17 runs, but his dismissal left Afghanistan reeling at 38 for 5.
However, Omarzai and Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai turned the match around with a record-breaking 142-run partnership for the sixth wicket. It became the highest partnership for the sixth wicket or lower in men's T20 internationals.
Omarzai initially took time to settle before launching a spectacular assault on the Zimbabwean bowlers. He smashed 12 sixes and eight fours, reaching his maiden T20I century in just 44 balls.
His final assault was particularly devastating, as he collected 22 runs from four deliveries in Evans' last over before completing his hundred. Omarzai eventually departed for a magnificent 116 off 50 balls.
Ijaz also played a crucial role, scoring 52 off 27 deliveries with aggressive stroke play. Rashid Khan added further fireworks towards the end, remaining unbeaten on 25 off just six balls, including four sixes, as Afghanistan finished at 221 for 7.
Zimbabwe's Matigimu endured a difficult outing, conceding 103 runs in his five overs, while Evans also faced punishment during the closing stages.
Raza's century in vain as Zimbabwe fall short
Chasing 222 for victory, Zimbabwe suffered regular setbacks despite a promising start from Innocent Kaia and Brian Bennett.
Kaia scored 25 before Omarzai dismissed him, while Bennett, Ryan Burl and Tadiwanashe Marumani also departed cheaply. Rashid Khan removed Marumani to register his historic 200th T20I wicket.
Fareed Ahmad further damaged Zimbabwe's chase by dismissing Wessly Madhevere, leaving the hosts struggling at 82 for 5 at the halfway stage.
With the required run rate climbing, captain Sikandar Raza and debutant Tafadzwa Tsiga produced a remarkable fightback. The pair added an unbeaten 120-run partnership for the sixth wicket, keeping Zimbabwe's hopes alive.
Raza led the charge with an outstanding unbeaten 106 off 56 deliveries, becoming the oldest player to score a century in men's T20 internationals at the age of 40.
His innings included nine sixes and several powerful boundaries. Tsiga provided valuable support during his debut, helping Zimbabwe cross the 200-run mark.
Despite their incredible efforts, Zimbabwe finished on 202 for 5, falling 19 runs short of the target.
Afghanistan clinch series with one match remaining
Omarzai's extraordinary century proved decisive in a match that witnessed exceptional hitting from both sides. Afghanistan became the first men's T20I team to score more than 200 runs after losing their first four wickets for fewer than 20 runs.
Rashid Khan's milestone of 200 T20I wickets added another historic moment to Afghanistan's victory.
With this 19-run win, Afghanistan secured the three-match T20I series 2-0 with one match still remaining, underlining their batting depth and ability to recover from difficult situations.
